How to Sell More: Stop Getting Garbage Output from AI (And Start Getting Expert Results)
We've all seen it. Someone on social media types a simple prompt into an AI, and out comes a masterpiece—detailed, perfectly formatted, and exactly what they wanted. So, you try it. You type a similar prompt, and you get… garbage. Generic, useless, and nothing like the magic you just witnessed. What went wrong?
Perhaps you're past that stage and use AI regularly, but it still feels like a battle. You spend twenty minutes in a back-and-forth struggle, clarifying and rephrasing, only to give up and write it yourself. The output sounds like a robot wrote it for another robot—technically correct, but completely lifeless.
The problem isn't the AI. It's the input.
AI is a mirror; it reflects the quality of what you put into it. Vague input yields vague output. Specific, well-defined input yields specific, high-value output. The people getting incredible results from AI aren't necessarily smarter; they are simply more intentional and clear in their communication. They understand how to "program" the AI's response, not just ask it a question.
This is the core principle we teach at Sell More Academy: better input delivers better output. It's a fundamental truth, whether you're making pizza or programming an AI. As Papa John's famously turned the software principle of "better input, better output" into "better ingredients, better pizza," we must apply the same logic to our AI systems.
To move beyond the frustrating "blank cursor" moment and the subsequent useless wall of text, you need a framework. A starting point that eliminates the guesswork and ensures you provide the AI with the necessary instructions to generate expert-level results.
The CLEAR Framework: Your Blueprint for Better AI Prompts
The CLEAR framework is a simple, five-step process to structure any prompt and transform your vague requests into precise instructions. It's a checklist to ensure you cover all the essential components for a high-quality output, every single time.
1. C is for Context: Hire an Expert, Not a Generalist
Before you ask the AI to perform a task, tell it who it is. Don't just ask it to "write an email." Instead, "hire" it for a specific role. By defining the persona, you instantly move the AI from a general-purpose tool to a specialized expert.
Strong Prompt: "Act as a senior copywriter. Write a launch email for our new AI coaching tool. The audience is overwhelmed agency owners who hate tech. The tone should be empathetic but authoritative."
2. L is for Limits: Creativity Thrives Within Constraints
Limits stop the AI from rambling, hallucinating, and defaulting to boring answers. By setting clear boundaries—word count, format, tone—you force the AI to be creative within the box you've created.
Weak Prompt: "Give me some ideas for a blog post about sales."
Strong Prompt: "Give me five blog post titles about sales. Limit each title to under 60 characters. Do not use a colon. Focus on contrarian viewpoints that challenge standard advice."
3. E is for Examples: Show, Don't Just Tell
When you provide examples of what you want, you train the AI on your specific style and expectations. Instead of hoping the AI guesses correctly, you show it exactly what success looks like. Examples eliminate ambiguity and dramatically improve output quality.
Weak Prompt: "Write a social media post."
Strong Prompt: "Write a social media post similar to this example: [paste example]. Match the tone, length, and style. Focus on the same type of hook."
4. A is for Action: Be Specific About the Task
The action is the specific task you want performed. We're usually good at this part—"Write me an email," "Create a blog post," "Summarize this document." However, the action must work together with the other elements of CLEAR to produce exceptional results.
Weak Prompt: "Help me with marketing."
Strong Prompt: "Create a 30-day email marketing campaign outline with subject lines and key talking points for each email."
5. R is for Refinement: Iterate and Improve
Your first prompt will rarely be perfect. Refinement is the ongoing process of improving your prompts based on the output you receive. Each time you use a prompt, evaluate what worked and what didn't, then adjust. This continuous improvement loop transforms good prompts into exceptional ones.
Weak Approach: Accept the first output and move on.
Strong Approach: Review the output, identify gaps, and refine your prompt with additional instructions like "Make this more conversational" or "Remove corporate jargon and use plain language."
When you combine all five elements—Context, Limits, Examples, Action, and Refinement—you create a system that produces expert-level results every single time. This framework is how you move from being a casual user to a power user who consistently generates world-class output.
